  • The Etches Park Train Depot, an East Midlands Railway project, in Derby, focused on modernising the North Shed Extension and the refurbishment of the lighting systems. With a total project value of £35 million, the initiative aimed to enhance safety, efficiency, and functionality across various areas. This included shed interiors, pit lighting, and external fixtures.

The Etches Park Train Depot project specifications included high-level lighting, maintenance and inspection pits, fuel sidings, and trackside lighting. Significant upgrades were implemented during the Design and Build (D&B) phase. The high-level lighting was enhanced with Fagerhult Hero high bay luminaires, and Designplan Linilux and Redoubt fittings were chosen for low-level and pit lighting. To ensure compliance and reliability, emergency lighting products were supplied with integral key switches and signage.

There were numerous challenges to overcome to provide a sustainable and long life solution. These included, being able to withstand the high temperature and high chemical content in any jet washing or cleaning apparatus. Another consideration was the physical dimensions of the maintenance pits, as well as fixing mechanisms within the pits. Due to the possibility of impact providing high IK rated luminaries ensured that the products meet the 30 year design life that we provide with our lighting.

This project underscores the importance of engaging stakeholders early, thoroughly understanding project requirements, and challenging specifications to optimise outcomes. By leveraging technical expertise and fostering collaboration, the team achieved outstanding results, setting a benchmark for future innovation.
