Maintaining a safe and clean environment in heavy duty rail maintenance pits requires specialised lighting designed to withstand tough conditions while ensuring visibility, safety, and compliance.

Durable, High IP-Rated Luminaires

Luminaires with high IP ratings, such as IP69K, are essential for these environments. They withstand high pressure cleaning and resist chemical etching from corrosive substances and cleaning agents. Gaskets must also endure exposure to diesel, brake fluids, and detergents to ensure full sealing.

Controlled Light Output for Worker Comfort

To prevent excessive brightness and glare, light output should be limited to 1000 lumens per 300 cm². This level provides enough visibility for detailed work while ensuring comfort and reducing distractions for workers.

Safe, Accessible Design

  • Pit Navigation: Easy access to and from the pit is essential, as is clear navigation beneath trains in tight spaces.
  • Flush Mounted Fixtures: Lighting should be flush-mounted or designed to prevent use as steps or obstacles, ensuring safety.
  • Impact Resistance: Luminaires must be impact-resistant to guard against falling tools and reduce injury risk.

Emergency and Maintenance Considerations

  • Emergency Lighting: Fixtures should provide adequate lighting for evacuation, with reliable illumination along the pit floor.
  • Easy Maintenance: To retain IP rating, rear access is recommended for maintenance, preserving the luminaire’s integrity.

Energy Efficiency with Smart Controls

Energy savings are possible with DALI-2 control systems and sensors to automate lighting during periods of inactivity, optimising operational efficiency.

Technical Support

Following BS EN 12464-1:2021 AND RT/ENGP/06/22 requirements ensures safe and effective lighting in maintenance pits.

  • Pit Floor Illumination: 100 lux average
  • Emergency Mode: 1 lux along the pit’s centre line
  • Underside of Train: 300 lux with 0.5 uniformity
  • Pit Wall Vertical Surfaces: 350 lux for rear wheel face work
  • London Underground Requirements: 125 lux at 0.7 uniformity at rail height, even with a train overhead
