In the Designplan laboratory, we test our luminaires every step of the way, from concept through to completion. We continuously upgrade and improve our luminaires, retesting them throughout their product life cycle. Constant investment in our laboratory helps innovate our lighting solutions in terms of performance and environmental impact.
Photometry
At Designplan, we take pride in having our own photometry facility, enabling us to swiftly measure new and bespoke luminaires. As the first luminaire manufacturer in the UK to utilise a goniophotometer, we employ a system distinct from conventional arm and mirror structures. This capability is further enhanced by our use of a large integrating sphere.
Downloads
We offer BIM, IES and LDT files, downloadable from each individual product pages, to support you when creating a lighting design.
Corrosion Testing
To simulate the corrosion process, tests are regularly carried out on coated samples. These are continuously sprayed with a salt solution over a longer period of time in a special test cabinet. Inspections are conducted at 240, 480, 720, and 1000 hours for blisters, rust, and cracks. After 1000 hours, samples are dried, inspected, and subjected to a paint adhesion test per ASTM D3359-09 using adhesive tape.
Ligature Resistant Luminaires
Products with ligature-resistant designs are mainly used to prevent self-harm, whether accidental or intentional. In our test laboratory, we test new ligature resistant luminaires based on guidelines from the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in collaboration with the “Design in Mental Health” (DiMHN) network for testing secure health products.
High temperatures and extreme weather
The robust construction of our luminaires ensures they can cope with all types of weather. High ingress protection, corrosion resistant paint, robust steel bodies or LM6 aluminium castings and extrusions are key components of our “robust and durable” ethos.
Our luminaires regularly operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -25°C to 25°C. In some cases our fittings are required to operate in ambient temperatures as high as 50°C. We offer several luminaires tested and proven to withstand regular temperatures of 40° or 50°C. These luminaires are subjected to a thorough assessment process in our in-house testing laboratory.
