The pendulum test is used to measure the impact resistance of luminaires and materials in accordance with standards BS EN 62262 and BS EN 60598-1. We perform pendulum hammer tests up to IK10 (20 Joules).
A weight, known as a hammer, is attached to a pendulum which is positioned in front of the luminaire. Different weights and drop heights are used to generate a specific level of impact energy, measured in Joules. The weight is dropped onto the most vulnerable part of the luminaire 3 times, avoiding any rebounds or second impacts.
The surface of the luminaire is visually examined after each impact. After the 3rd impact the sample is fully inspected. Compliance with BS EN 60598-1 is met if there is no damage. In particular, there shall be no access to live parts, no impairment of the insulation and no change to the IP rating. It shall also bepossible to remove and replace any external covers.
